Due to its exceptional landscape beauties, interesting geomorphology, great indentedness of its coastline and particularly its rich biocenosis of the marine ecosystem, a larger part of the Kornati maritime zone was proclaimed as a national park in 1980.
Today National Park “Kornati” occupies an area of about 217 km2 and includes 89 islands, islets and cliffs. Despite this relatively large number of islands, the continental part of the Park forms less than ¼ of the total area.
