Viškovo is located north-west of Rijeka. This is the second most densely populated local self-government unit in the County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar. In an area of twenty square kilometres, there are approximately 15 thousand inhabitants. Viškovo developed along a route that was first mentioned back in the 16th century, and which connected Rijeka with Trieste, Ljubljana, Graz, and Vienna. The town centre emerged around the Church of St. Mathew, which was built in 1862 on the hill of Viškov Brijeg, and after which both the town and the municipality were named. Viškovo is home to the Halubajski Zvončari bell ringers, whose pageant has been inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List as intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia.
