Primorsko-goranska županija

Given its unique blend of the green and the blue, the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County is one of the most developed and one of the most attractive tourism destinations in Croatia. It encompasses three different geographical areas, the coastal area of Opatija Riviera, city of Rijeka and the circle of towns and municipalities surrounding it, as well as the Crikvenica-Vinodol Riviera, and then there are the Kvarner islands Krk, Rab, Cres and Lošinj, and finally the mountainous part of Gorski Kotar. In terms of tourism promotion, this diversity of the „green and the blue“ is called Kvarner.

The combination of the extraordinary geographical position and the mild Mediterranean climate, is what makes this area a melting pot of most diversified influences that came in touch over the centuries, making Kvarner today a modern and attractive tourism destination, a region of aromas and flavours, a destination of health, of exquisite cuisine, a region rich in natural and historical heritage, a vacation destination for all generations. Kvarner is distinguished for its national park Risnjak and the nature park Učka, its natural phenomena, protected areas, rare habitats of griffon vultures, but it is also distinguished as a cradle of Croatian Glagolitic heritage, with cities of beautiful architecture, sophistication and avant-garde.

The extraordinary and medically proven beneficial climate together with its location in the vicinity of the mayor Central European cities, were the main reasons for the first visits that took place during the late 19th century, as well as for the construction of spas and rehabilitation centres, and the supporting hotel and other facilities, which today form the basis of the tourism industry.

And it is precisely because of the rich natural and cultural heritage that the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County has all of the prerequisites for the year-round tourism. Gorski Kotar has a network of ski slopes with Platak as the largest sports and recreation centre and a unique ski slope overlooking the Adriatic Sea. For active holiday enthusiasts there are kilometres of cycling routes, hiking paths and trails. Kvarner is known as an attractive nautical destination with numerous marinas and small ports, and the city of Rijeka, which is also the County’s seat, is a well-known urban tourism destination. The City of Rijeka also bears the prestigious title of the European capital of culture 2020.
