Zagreb is the largest city in Croatia and also its capital. The wider area of Zagreb brings the total metropolitan population up to 1.2 million inhabitants. It is a city known for its diverse economy, high quality of living, excellent public transportation system, universities, museums, sporting and entertainment events. Its main branches of economy are high-tech industries and the service sector. The first recorded appearance of the name Zagreb is dated to 1094, at which time the city existed as two different city centres: Kaptol and Gradec. Zagreb was the centre of the Croatian National Revival and saw the erection of important cultural and historic institutions. 1987 Summer Universiade (World University Games) was held in Zagreb. This year city cohosts European University games with city Rijeka.
