Opatija is situated in the Gulf of Kvarner in a sheltered position at the foot of Učka mountain. It is a popular summer and winter resort. The town's modern history began in 1844, when Villa Angiolina was founded. It became a fashionable destination for the Austrian imperial family and Austrian nobility and soon more luxury hotels and villas were built.
One of famous monuments is Maiden with the seagull. The story begins in distant 1891. when count Arthur Kesselstadt tragically lost his wife in a spring storm in the sea in front of Opatija. Devastated with grief, count´s family put the statue of “Madonna Del Mare” on the reef to wake for her lost soul.
